Second meeting of Steering Committee of the Global Education First Initiative
The Steering Committee of the Global Education First Initiative will meet in Washington, DC (USA) to identify actions that can contribute to a major breakthrough in education, build a shared vision of the expected results of the Initiative and agree on timelines.
Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO is Executive Secretary of this high-level body that provides strategic direction and guidance to the UN Secretary-General in order to ensure visibility and success of the Global Education First Initiative.
Committee members include executive heads of UN agencies - UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, UN-Women - the World Bank, leading organizations supporting education and representatives of Australia (AusAID) and Bangladesh – two “champion countries” of the Initiative.
The Global Education First Initiative, led by the Secretary-General of the UN, gathers a broad spectrum of world leaders to advocate support for education. The Initiative aims to raise the political profile of education, strengthen the global movement to achieve quality education and generate additional and sufficient funding through sustained advocacy efforts.
