Melina Mercouri International Prize

Melina Mercouri Prize

The purpose of the Melina Mercouri International Prize (UNESCO-Greece) is to reward outstanding examples of action to safeguard and enhance the world's major cultural landscapes.

Award of the UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes to the two joint prizewinners: the cultural landscape of Battir (Occupied Palestinian Territory) and the Garni Reserve Cultural and Historical Museum (Armenia), as well as to the Wadi Hanifa site (Saudi Arabia), Special Mention of the Jury.
It is to bear the name of Melina Mercouri, a precursor of integrated conservation and sustainable development, a memorable actress and Minister of Culture of Greece. It meets a new need, clearly identified by the World Heritage Committee, which, at its sixteenth session, held in Santa Fe in December 1992, recognized that the protection of cultural landscapes, a richer concept than the conventional one of 'monuments' or 'sites', is one of the main priorities of the present time.

The Prize, established by UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture of Greece in honour of the artist and former Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri, has been awarded every two years since 1999 to reward efforts to preserve and enhance cultural landscapes, specifically those fashioned mainly or not by human hands.

The award ceremony will take place in the presence of Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and Mr Mounir Bouchenaki, Director-General of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and President of the Jury. It will be followed by a concert of chamber music by the New Hellenic Quartet and Janis Vakarelis on the piano.
