Consultation meeting on the Pedagogical Use of the General History of Africa and the Drafting Teams of Common Educational Contents

The Sankofa Bird

The drafting teams and the Scientific Committee for the project on the pedagogical use of the eight volumes collection of the General History of Africa meet to lay the foundations of the development of common pedagogical contents for the use of African schools.
Although it was successfully completed in 1999, the General History of Africa has remained inaccessible to the public. Very few history textbooks have actually incorporated the aspirations of the project and the teaching of history in Africa continues to be Eurocentric.

UNESCO decided, in cooperation with the African Union, to initiate the second phase of the General History of Africa, to promote the teaching of history based on African cultural perspective.

Some 65 experts from 36 countries in Africa and its diaspora (USA, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, France), will attend the meeting.

The purpose of this encounter is to define the methodology, determine the teams’ working methods and develop a work plan.

It will be preceded by a workshop on the revision of concepts, paradigms and categories used in social sciences and humanities and applied to Africa.

This workshop which is a follow-up to a recommendation of the Regional Conference in Tripoli (2010) is to make the drafting group members aware of this problematic and, in particular, to:
• identify problematic concepts;
• define how to deal with Eurocentric concepts;
• identify new concepts and categories "decolonize";
• consider how to better understanding the past by using languages, place names, ethnonym, African anthroponomy;
• identify and resolve problems with the use of African words (e.g., collection, transcription, harmonization, etc.).
• identify the pedagogical implications of decolonization of the concepts and paradigms used in social sciences and applied to Africa.
