Celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Gabon

UNESCO Libreville office organizes two events to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day: a meeting with government, media regulatory body and media professional organizations for official submission of the Media Development Indicators (MDI) evaluation report and a forum on public service broadcasting as the public funded media broadcasting institutions became PSBs since january 2012.

- Meeting with government bodies:

During the last World Press Freedom Day celebration (May 3, 2011) the Minister of communication (Gabon) made the commitment to redraft the media law and to, among other thing, align it with the exigencies of media development and freedom in Gabon. The new law will take into consideration the decriminalization of press offences. Following government commitment, UNESCO, in partnership with UNDP, conducted a holistic evaluation of media development in Gabon using the Media Development Indicators (MDI). The celebration of the WPFD this year will be the occasion to officially present the conclusions of the evaluation as well as to submit the report to government, media regulatory agency, media self-regulatory body and any interested parties.

- Forum:

Since January 2012, previous State owned broadcasting media (Radio Gabon, RTG1 and RTG2) became media of public service broadcasting under the name Radio Gabon and Gabon Television.

PSB being new in the country, actual changes in the mission of public funded broadcast media should be followed by relevant programming and practices to ensure their contribution to the transformation of the society and development of democracy.

Therefore, the forum will be the occasion to revisit public service broadcasting concept and to engage participants in discussions on the possible implication of the current changes to the every day practice of journalism and station’s programming.
