2013 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes Ceremony

UNESCO is committed to supporting effective literacy policies and programmes. To that effect, the Organization honours excellence and innovation in the field of literacy throughout the world.

Every year, on the occasion of International Literacy Day (8 September), UNESCO awards the International Literacy Prizes to institutions, organizations and individuals whose efforts contribute to the promotion of dynamic literate societies.
The UNESCO International Literacy Prizes consist in two kinds of Prize:
- The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy focuses on Literacy in rural areas, rural adults and out of school youth, particularly women and girls.
- The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize focuses on Literacy in multilingual contexts.

These prizes reward institutions, organizations or individuals for the implementation of programmes or innovative and effective projects for Literacy. The winners gain international recognition for their commitment, promotion for their inspirational initiative and financial support as each prize is worth 20,000 dollars (United States).

In the presence of the Laureates, important personalities, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Salif Traoré ‘A'salfo’ (lead singer of the group Magic System), the Prizes Ceremony, with testimonies and video footage, will be hosted by Claire Chazal, journalist, author and champion of several humanitarian causes in favour of access to education for underprivileged girls.
