The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also referred to as Rio+20, will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.
Organised by the Brazilian Government and UN DESA, the conference has three main objectives:
- to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development;
- to assess progress and gaps in implementation of agreed commitments;
- to address new and emerging challenges.

The two themes of the Conference are: a green economy within the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and the institutional framework for sustainable development.
