South Asia Regional Consultation on "Freedom of Information: The Right to Know"

© UNESCO
Freedom of Information

UNESCO New Delhi Office, UNDP and UNICEF organize a South Asia regional consultation to enhance awareness and understanding of the Right to Information (RTI) legislation and implementation issues and to promote exchange of country experiences on how access to information can strengthen governance, transparency and accountability, and the role that media can play in this process.
The expected outcome is that key RTI-related issues for policy and programme interventions in South Asian countries will be highlighted, and entry points to improve the programmatic support at the country-level in the areas of RTI will be proposed. A network of RTI practitioners, media professionals, civil society and other stakeholders across countries in South Asia will be formed to share experience, information and lessons learned on RTI challenges and implementation.

World Press Freedom Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December, 1993, as an outgrowth of the Seminar on Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press. This Seminar took place in Windhoek, Namibia, from 29 April to 3 May 1991, and led to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media. The Windhoek Declaration called for the establishment, maintenance and fostering of an independent, pluralistic and free press and emphasized the importance of a free press to the development and maintenance of democracy in a nation, and for economic development.

Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
