International Forum "Freedom of Expression and Access to Information: Foundations of Democracy and the Knowledge Society"

®UNESCO SJO
Participants celebrate the World Press Freedom Day.

In the framework of the World Press Freedom Day, specialists in communication, journalists and media professionals will discuss Freedom of Information and Access to Knowledge in Latin America.
This event aims to:

- raise awareness among civil society organizations, governments, media and general public on the importance of fostering the free flow of information;

- promote freedom of expression as a universal human right; and

- facilitate development of best practices on access to information.

World Press Freedom Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December, 1993, as an outgrowth of the Seminar on Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press. This Seminar took place in Windhoek, Namibia, from 29 April to 3 May 1991, and led to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media. The Windhoek Declaration called for the establishment, maintenance and fostering of an independent, pluralistic and free press and emphasized the importance of a free press to the development and maintenance of democracy in a nation, and for economic development.

Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
