Carnaval d’Oruro
Organized on the occasion of the International Festival of Cultural Diversity, the Carnival of Oruro, second in scale and importance among Latin American carnivals after that of Rio de Janiero, is an exhilarating demonstration of the rich beliefs, folk arts, and medieval mysteries of Bolivian culture. With the participation of musical groups Ruphay, Machaqa, Pukawara, Banda Bolivia, and the Sikuris Cultural Center, and dance troupes Wayra, Quipus de Bolivie, Jenecherú, Nouvelle Génération, Bolivie sans Frontière, and Groupo Enriquez.
Each year in Oruro more than 28,000 dancers and 10,000 musicians participate in this prestigious celebration in which dance, music, masks, textiles and embroideries intermingle. The Carnival of Oruro was declared as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001.
