Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) 50th Anniversary

On 8 June 2010 (International Ocean Day) UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) celebrates its 50th anniversary in UNESCO Headquarters’ Fontenoy Building, Paris.
Since the International Indian Ocean Expedition in 1960 the IOC has worked to promote international cooperation in researching and protecting the ocean. To mark its 50th anniversary a full day of varied celebrations will be officially launched at 11am by the Chairperson of the IOC. During the day the book 'Troubled Waters: Ocean Science and Governance' will be launched and an excerpt from the film 'Oceans' will be shown.

The goals of the event are to: enhance public awareness of the importance of ocean science to society; take stock of advances in marine sciences, and plan for the future; promote the image of IOC and of international solidarity ocean science;and demonstrate to governments and to the public the value of the Commission's achievements.
