Partnerships for Early Childhood in Africa - Launch of the Bouba et Zaza collection, in the series « Cultures d’Enfances » (Michel Lafon)

WCECCE Flyer

The first of the six Education for All (EFA) goals is ‘Expanding and improving comprehensive early childhood care and education, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children’. Five years from the 2015 deadline, many countries are still far from the EFA and Millenium Development Goals objectives, particularly as related to early childhood. This is the case in most African countries. The involvement of the private sector, although strongly recommended by the Dakar Framework for Action in 2000 is almost non-existent, and there is a lack of impetus to improve the quality and conditions of teaching and learning
In this context the Working Group on Early Childhood Development (WGECD) of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA/WGECD), chaired by UNESCO BREDA, organized the Fourth African International Conference on Early Childhood Development (ECD) on the theme ‘From Policy to Action’ (10-13 November 2009). One of the strong recommendations of this Conference was to help countries ensure quality, relevant early childhood services in Africa.

UNESCO BREDA and the WGECD subsequently organized a partnership with the Publisher Michel Lafon Education. This project emphasizes the schoolbook as a quality input for teaching and learning for the 5-8 age group; examines practices and methods in education; encourages interaction between schools, families and communities; and promotes African integration and the enhanced value of indigenous cultures as an integral part of the pedagogical approach.
