Violent Extremism and Radicalization: Women as Victims, Perpetrators and Agents of Change

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Unesco is organizing a Panel discussion on Women´s role in the recent rise in violent extremism and radicalization and how women are involved as perpetrators, as victims and as advocates to counter violent extremism and radicalization.

Attendance by invitation only.
At UNESCO, we are convinced that a gendered analysis of radicalization and violent extremism is critical and timely. The recent increased political attention to the role of women in countering and preventing violent extremism and terrorism is encouraging. While the international efforts cited above are applauded, the frameworks are meaningful only when they are translated into action. Thus far, this global attention has made too little difference in the day-to-day lives of far too many women and girls trapped in and around conflict areas. At the same time, too little attention has been given to examining how the resources and political will generated by the post-2015 framework could help move this agenda forward.

In a context of increasingly radical and violent extremism, the objective of IWD 2016 is threefold:
• To raise awareness on the different roles and perceptions of women and men in a context of violent extremism and radicalization;
• To identify and support women’s experiences and capacities as peace-builders and agents of change;
• To acknowledge and celebrate, on the occasion of IWD, the efforts of the many women who claim their power to say “no” to radical extremism.
