National Workshop on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Nauru

This workshop aims at providing multi-stakeholder consultation on the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Nauru, a small island country in the Pacific.
It will bring together ICH custodians, community representatives, NGOs, private sector, academics, and civil society as well as the authorities concerned. National experts will make presentations on diverse ICH elements in Nauru such as oral traditions in Nauruan language, music and festive events, frigate birds catching, and crafts. The Workshop will also discuss he roles that traditional chiefs, museums and women can play in ICH safeguarding in culturally pluralistic community. It will then examine the opportunity presented by the 2003 Convention and discuss a strategy and action plan for ICH safeguarding in the country.

The Workshop will be organised by Nauru NATCOM with financial assistance from UNESCO/Japanese Funds-in-Trust.

A special event will also be held on 21 May 2011 to celebrate the World Cultural Diversity Day for Dialogue and Development in Nauru. The event consists of design and crafts display, canoe racing and essey competition on the topic of culture and sustainable development among school students in Nauru.
