African Climate Teach-in Day

Education for sustainable development  

The event will consist of lectures on different aspects of climate change prepared by some of the leading experts in the field from across the African continent.
The lectures will be prepared in a way that allows the contents to be understood by secondary school and university students.
The "African Climate Teach-In Day" will disseminate not only scientific information, but also approaches, methods, strategies, and other types of action taking place all around Africa, in order to cope with the challenge of climate change.

The aims of are to:

- disseminate scientific information on climate change in Africa in a way that will be broadly understood, including elements related to its environmental, social, economic and policy aspects, to schools and universities around the world

- raise awareness among secondary and university students on the complexity of matters related to climate change in Africa and the need for personal engagement and action

- provide an opportunity to introduce projects and other initiatives being undertaken at the international but also at the regional and local level by schools, universities, government bodies, NGOs and other stakeholders from across the African continent

- discuss the problems, barriers, challenges and potential related to climate change in Africa, both at the local and regional levels

Last but not least, the "African Climate Teach-In Day" is meant to encourage more networking and information exchange among participants and hopefully catalyse cooperation initiatives and possibly new projects.

Moreover, it will pay special emphasis to research linking climate change with one or more of the Millennium Development Goals' categories: poverty and hunger; universal primary education; gender equality and women's empowerment; malaria, and other diseases; as well as environmental sustainability.

The "African Climate Teach-in Day" will reach a broad audience which consistes of:

- Secondary school students (Upper levels)
- University students of all subjects
- University lecturers and professors and
- Interested individuals

The approach used is an inclusive one and welcomes all interested people to participate.

The event will give school teachers, university lecturers and their students the chance to examine some key climate-related issues. The "African Climate Teach-In Day" is meant not only to provide information to students, but also engage them on discussions on how to solve the climate-related problems seen in their regions and in the action needed to tackle the challenges of climate change. By encouraging school and university students to debate climate issues, we will fostering their awareness on climate matters and will, at the same time, be motivating them to discuss ways to handle the impact of climate problems
