Peace-Building Conference and Fourth UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassador Workshop

Youth Drive Change

The conference and workshop aim to reinforce the capacities in the management of conflicts and the construction of peace of more than one hundred young boys and girls from various countries of Asia and the Pacific. It will allow them to become true UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassadors and to continue their career as diplomats within the United Nations or in an NGO.

Organized in cooperation with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Eubios Ethics Institute and the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, the event will start with a Youth Conference for Peace based on a Model United Nations (MUN) conference.

The first two days of the event will take place in Hiroshima, where participants will have the opportunity to visit the peace museum and to talk to atomic bomb survivors, and the other days in Etajima, an island about 30 minutes from Hiroshima.

During the first three days of the conference, participants will be assigned problems and will represent stakeholders, such as the government, companies, NGO’s, different countries, etc. Among others, a scenario based on the Fukushima Nuclear Accident will be submitted to them.

The participants will be trained by UN and other professionals on how to discuss problems, devise solutions, and write action plans. One unique aspect of the conference is training provided by experts working within the UN system who train participants within the perspective of a diplomatic career.

The training will assist and inspire participants in building peace within their communities whether they hope to become diplomats or work for the UN or an NGO.

The last four days will be devoted to a UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassador Workshop on the theme “Building Communities Peace by Peace”.

Participants will listen to six young Ambassadors who already benefited of a similar training. Together, they will identify real peace-related problems in their communities and create a practical implementable action plan and commit themselves to implementing it when they return home. Those who successfully implement their action plans will receive the official title of UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassador.

The UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassadors Training Program was launched by the UNESCO Office in Bangkok in 2010.
