Presentations and Open discussion on “The Media Landscape in Lao PDR”

UNESCO with support of the Lao PDR United Nations Communications Group and in close collaboration with the Lao Journalist Association is celebrating the World Press Freedom Day under the theme “The Media Landscape in Lao PDR”. The commemoration will take place on 3 May 2012 in Ventiane, Lao PDR. The presentations will be followed by an open discussion of related topics, such as media law and media practice, development opportunities and challenges.
The aims of the celebration are:

• To focus on the media law and media practice in Lao PDR,
• To discuss the media landscape in Lao PDR and in Thailand, and
• To elaborate on UNESCO’s media development indicators.

The programme of the celebration is indicated below:

• 9.00 am Welcome (Mr. Minh H. Pham, UN Resident Coordinator, Lao PDR)
• 9.10 am Opening speech (Etienne Clement, Deputy Director UNESCO Bangkok)
• 9.20 am Media Development Indicators (Dieter Schlenker, UNESCO Bangkok)
• 9.30 am Media Landscape in Thailand (Pradit Ruangdit, Secretary General, Thai Journalist Association)
• 9.40 am Media Landscape in Lao PDR (Vannaphone Sitthirath, Media Consultant, Lao PDR)
• 9.50 am Media Law and media practice in Lao PDR (Somsanouk Mixay, Deputy President, Lao Journalist Association)
• 10-11 am Open Discussion, Questions & Answers
