A 3-day workshop will be organized at the Tishreen University in partnership with Latakia medical board and in coordination with the National Commission for UNESCO in Syria. It aims to introduce the Bioethics Core Curriculum (BCC) and Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UDBHR) as effective teaching tools and methods of ethics and bioethics education; and, to support knowledge sharing among national universities and scholars.

Although bioethics is well recognized as an effective tool to address ethical conflicts in medical treatments and research, capacity building to address such issues needs to be further developed in many of the Arab Member States. The political instability and constant change of the governments in some countries are hindering the establishment and the functioning of national bioethics committees.

Member States in the Arab region will be supported to strengthen capacity to address emerging issues in the field of bioethics and establish appropriate guidelines through promotion of ethical dialogues into regional cultural contexts, examining the universal principles on bioethics stipulated in the declarations adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO namely the “Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights (1997)”, “International Declaration on Human Genetic Data (2003)” and “Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005)”.

International organizations, regional organizations, representatives of national authorities and experts in the Arab region will be consulted to identify the urgent issues to be addressed in the region.

Building on the initiative from the Faculty of Medecine – University of Damascus (Dec 2017) collecting the interests from an interdisciplinary group of professors, young researchers and students, the workshop aims to present the Basic Bioethics Program (BCC) and the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UDBHR) as effective teaching tools and teaching methods of ethics and bioethics.
