UNESCO will organize on 24 March 2010 a Forum devoted to the theme “Rebuilding the social, cultural and intellectual fabric of Haiti”. The Forum will be held from 9.30 a.m to 6.00 p.m, in Room II (Fontenoy Building).
The earthquake that levelled Haiti and its tectonic magnitude is dwarfed by the extent of the physical and emotional damages suffered by the Haitian people. UNESCO immediately made it a priority to respond to the needs of the Haitian population, engaging in a series of integrated initiatives in the fields of education, culture, sciences, communication and information. Initiatives by UNESCO or others agencies will only benefit Haitians if they contribute to the larger goal of revitalizing the social, cultural and intellectual fabric of the country. The Haitian people must take the lead and be the key actors of this endeavour.

In its role as a catalyzing partner for the Haitian people, UNESCO will gather on 24 March 2010 Haitian leaders, intellectuals, artists and social scientists from the wider Haiti community, which includes its strong and vibrant diaspora, and with international experts and friends of Haiti during a one day forum.
The results and recommendations from this Forum will be included in UNESCO’s contribution to the international donors’ conference on Haiti that will be held on 31 March at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Forum will be opened by Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO. The panelists will discuss the following themes:

 After the earthquake : mobilizing knowledge and skills to rebuild Haiti (9.30 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
 A unique history continued: the strength of Haiti’s cultural heritage, identity and creativity (2 p.m. – 4 p.m.)
 Rebuilding the education system: a critical condition for Haitian renewal and a source of intellectual vitality (4 p.m. – 6 p.m.)

This meeting is intended for members of the UNESCO Secretariat, representatives of Member States, NGOs, media and the public at large. Following the panel presentations, there will be opportunity for a discussion involving the audience.

Simultaneous interpretation of the proceedings will be provided in English and French.

A special performance open to the public will follow the Forum: Melovivi ou le piège, a play by Haitian playwright Frankétienne, which features Frankétienne and Garnel Innocent. It will be presented at UNESCO Headquarters, Room I at 8 p.m.
