Photographic Exhibition - Education for All

Uganda 2009 - © UNESCO/M. Hofer
Karamojong families in northeastern Uganda travel long distances to follow grazing herds, which means they need schooling that can go with them.

Education offers hope and the promise of a better life. Yet today there are 72 million children out of school, 54% of these are girls. This exhibition captures the extraordinary efforts that ordinary people are making to secure an education. Its images also send a message to political leaders around the world. We must ensure that all children can claim their share of a better future that education promises.
Education offers hope and the promise of a better life. Long recognised as a basic human right, it also expands opportunities. In our knowledge-based world, education is a foundation for prosperity, democracy and social justice. Yet for millions of the world’s most disadvantaged people, the right to a quality education is violated every day.

These pictures capture the extraordinary efforts that ordinary people are making to secure an education. The visually impaired girl in Ethiopia learning with her friends, the indigenous child being taught in her mother tongue in Peru, and the mobile schools serving pastoralists in Uganda all bear testimony to the resolve of parents and children.

The images also send a message to political leaders. Ten years ago, governments pledged to ensure that by 2015 no child would be denied the right to a decent quality education. Yet today 72 million children are out of school, 54% of them girls. And the photos of overcrowded classrooms in Liberia and slum schools in Pakistan highlight the struggle to provide an effective learning environment. If the ambition of Education for All by 2015 is to be achieved, governments need to show far greater resolve in tackling these problems. They also need to tackle head-on the social inequalities that deprive children of a right to education because they are female, poor, members of an ethnic minority or carrying a disability.

This photographic exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Education for All goals. In striving for Education for All, it is our duty to ensure that all children, youths and adults can claim their share of the better future that education promises.
