UNESCO is jointly organizing a training workshop on the development of science parks and technology business incubators, in cooperation with the Costa Rican Government. The project is sponsored by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
This training workshop has been organized by the UNESCO Cluster Office in San Jose and the Division for Science Policy and Sustainable Development at Headquarters, in cooperation with the Costa Rican Government, to strengthen existing science parks and technology business incubators in Latin America and the Caribbean and promote the establishment of new ones.

A similar regional workshop was conducted in Asia-Pacific (2007), in Africa (2007) and the Arab States (2006).

The workshop’s objectives are:
1. to upgrade the knowledge of managers or future managers of science park and technology business incubators;
2. to strengthen the regional network of science parks and technology business incubators in Latin America and the Caribbean; as well as
3. to select a science park that can be used as a UNESCO-World Technopolis Association (WTA) pilot project.

Four prominent international experts will serve as lecturers at this workshop:
(i) Prof. Doeg-Seong Oh, Professor at Chungnam University and Director General of World Technopolis Association, Republic of Korea;
(ii) Prof. Fred Phippips, Professor of Management, Alliant International University, USA;
(iii) Mr Josep Miquel Piqué, CEO of 22@Barcelona, Spain; and
(iv) Mr José Alberto Sampaio Aranha, Director PUC-Rio Genesis Institute, Brazil.

The workshop will principally target existing or future science park and technology business incubator managers in Latin America and the Caribbean countries.
