Benjamin S. Halpern, Director of the Center for Marine Assessment and Planning, will be giving the 2013 Anton Bruun Memorial Lecture, entitled "The Ocean Health Index: global and regional applications and future directions".
Assessment and management of the coasts and ocean increasingly focus on achieving healthy oceans, but without a clear definition of what a healthy ocean is or a tool to measure progress towards achieving that goal. The Ocean Health Index provides a quantitative, transparent, flexible and repeatable means of assessing and measuring ocean health across the many different benefits, or values, that people use to define healthy ecosystems.
The Anton Bruun Memorial lecture Series is dedicated to the memory of the noted Danish oceanographer and first chairman of the Commission, Dr Anton Frederick Bruun. The “Anton Bruun Memorial Lectures” were established in accordance with Resolution 19 of the Sixth Session of the IOC Assembly in 1970, in which the Commission proposed that important intersession developments be summarized by speakers in the fields of solid earth studies, physical and chemical oceanography and meteorology, and marine biology.
