« Memo’Risks - my city is getting ready »
A culture of risk prevention is now an urgent requirement, including future generations. That is why, on 26 June 2013, an Award ceremony, organized by the French association “Prévention 2000”, will be held at UNESCO Headquarters for the 2nd session of «Memo ‘Risks - My City is Getting Ready » contest. This original competition is sponsored by UNESCO which fully supports the educational and awareness-raising at the local level as well as essential strategies for promotion, prevention and preparedness to reduce risks related to natural disasters.
This action is within the framework of the global United Nations campaign "My city is getting ready" which began in 2010 with a list of 10 essential actions for making cities more resilient to natural hazards. During this session, schools and municipalities, including parents, have to work together and establish a dialogue, to expand prevention and risk knowledge.
Taking part in the competition allows participants and partners to address two (out of the ten) essential actions, namely: a) establishing a coordination mechanism that enables the understanding and reduction of risk from natural hazards based on civil group and citizens’ participation and b) ensure that educational programmes (both formal and informal) are established within schools and local communities.
This year, these projects focus only on flood risk knowing that in France half of the municipalities are affected by the floods and about 3.5 million homes are located in a flood zone.
