Established by UNESCO in 2001, the World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated worldwide on 10 November each year. The day offers an opportunity to mobilize various partners to highlight the important role of science in society and to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues and the relevance of science in their daily lives.

This year's theme is “Science for water cooperation: sharing data, knowledge and innovations” in celebration of the UN International Year of Water Cooperation 2013.

The official celebration held at UNESCO Headquarters will include the Microscience Kits and the Robotics workshop for engineering demonstrations, the launch of audio visual science teachers’ training modules in physics produced by UNESCO and CERN (in English, French and Portuguese) and display of posters from Deyrolle Pour l’Avenir in various languages.
The activities of the World Science Day for Peace and Development aim to improve the interface between science, policy and society by: ensuring that citizens are kept informed of and involved in developments in science and science policy decisions, emphasizing the role of scientists in advancing knowledge and in making societies more sustainable and raising the awareness of decision makers by providing the relevant knowledge to inform policy decisions. Themes for the World Science Day have included: Science for global sustainability (2012); Towards green societies (2011); science for the rapprochement of peoples and cultures (2010) and astronomy (2009).

Each year, Intergovernmental and Non-governmental organizations, scientific research institutions, professional associations, universities, municipalities, the media, science teachers, schools and others are encouraged to organize activities to celebrate the World Science Day for Peace and Development. Since its inception, the World Science Day has also been used to generate concrete projects, programmes and mobilize funding for science around the world.
