You are invited to attend this side event co-organized by UNESCO and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). It will be followed by a reception in the Fontenoy Restaurant on the 7th floor.
The side event will be hosted by Mme Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO and Mr Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the CBD.
This event will provide the occasion for a Paris celebration of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020), which will support the effective implementation of the UN system-wide Strategic Plan on Biodiversity. The Plan was agreed on by the Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Nagoya in October 2010 and endorsed by the UN General Assembly in December 2010.

At this event, the Director-General will officially launch the UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative – an interdisciplinary initiative that cuts across all of the Organization’s programme sectors. The UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative will facilitate UNESCO's cooperation with other parts of the UN system, through the "One UN initiative for Biodiversity”, in support of efforts by governments to implement their biodiversity commitments and to strengthen the intergovernmental science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
