This is the first congress of the newly created World Network of Island Biosphere Reserves.
It is jointly organised by the governments of Spain, the Republic of Korea, and the autonomous governments of Menorca and Jeju Island, under the overall coordination of UNESCO.
Island biosphere reserves from Europe, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and Africa will take part in this first meeting.
Jeju and Menorca biosphere reserves will agree on the work schedule before the release of the worldwide network.
It is expected that a commitment will be signed by participants for the approval of Menorca and Jeju biosphere reserves as candidates to become world headquarters of the Thematic Network of Island and Coastal Area Biosphere Reserves, to be approved at the next UNESCO Assembly.
