Activity: On UNESCO´s first-ever International Jazz Day, Peter Nelson and Dave Sampson will be on-air, presenting their weekly On the Corner jazz show live from the Loft stage, with live performances from some of Sydney's hottest young musicians. Come early for a jazz parade, led by The Glorious Sousaphonics. Then, On the Corner really gets cooking with a free live performance by hot young Sydney band The Cooking Club and National Jazz Award winner, Elana Stone. On April 30, a conference about jazz and liberty will be held at the Centro Nacional de Cultura (CNC) of Portugal with the participation of Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins (CNC’s chairman), António Vitorino d'Almeida (maestro), António José de Barros Veloso (pioneer jazz musician) and João Moreira dos Santos (jazz historian and promoter).
2. On April 30, release of the book “Lisbon’s Jazz guide”, written by João Moreira dos Santos (author of 5 books on the history of jazz in Portugal). This book covers 40 places where jazz was first heard in Lisbon between the 20’s and 50’s and was specifically created to celebrate the International Jazz Day.
3. On May 5, jazz walk in Lisbon. During a whole day participants will be able to visit the most important buildings where jazz was heard in Lisbon from the 20’s to the 50’s, including clubs, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, record shops and radio and television broadcast stations. This walking tour is guided by João Moreira dos Santos, who will focus on the main Portuguese artists inspired by jazz music and its message – including the iconic painters Almada Negreiros (1893-1970) and Stuart Carvalhais (1887-1961) – and the first jazz and blues musicians that played in Lisbon, namely the Robinson’s Syncopators (1927), Maude de Forrest (1927), Sidney Bechet (1928 and 1955), George W Lattimore (1930), Snappy Boys (1936), Piet Van Dijk Orchestra (1947) and Don Byas (1948).
