Visa's and Customs

As a member of the European Union, Latvia joined the Schengen Area in 2007 and requires a valid passport to enter. Nationals from Member States of the Schengen Area or travellers arriving from a Schengen Area-country are not subject to border controls.

Visa's are required to enter the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens may enter freely without a visa and are allowed to travel with their national ID or passport. Please refer to the website of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the list of third countries who may enter and stay in the Schengen Area without a visa.

Travel and getting around Riga

Airport Shuttle (operated by Air Baltic)

Getting to and from the airport

Riga International Airport (RIX) is located just 10 km away from the city centre and is easily accessible by public transport or taxi.

Several shuttle services are available, with the "Airport Express" taking you to Riga in about twenty minutes (times may vary) and stops at the following hotels: Islande Hotel, Maritim Park Hotel, Opera Hotel, Tallink Hotel, Radisson Blu Latvija, Albert Hotel, and Monika Centrum Hotel.
Departing every half an hour, a one-way fare amounts to €5.00 and can be bought at the "Welcome to Riga!"-tourist office located in the airport, from the shuttle bus driver, and in the hotels along the shuttle bus' route. The stop is located in front of exit E of the arrivals hall next to the parking area P1.

Bus No. 22 will take you from the airport terminal to the city centre (Old Town) in about 30 minutes (times may vary). A one-way fare can be bought at the driver (€1.20) or at "Welcome to Riga!"-tourist office (€0.60). There is also the option to purchase a 24h-ticket for €2.50. The stop is located behind car park P1 opposite exit E of the arrivals hall.

Taxi services are available at Riga airport 24 hours a day and are located outside the arrivals area. The average fare from the airport to the city centre (Old Town) is € 15.00-€20.00, which depends on both distance and time. Green AirBaltic and red Riga Cab taxi services are available and recommended.

Public transport

Riga has a frequent and extensive public transport network of buses, trams, and trolleybuses which run around the Old Town and across the bridge, with a stop located close to the WPFD 2015 venue.

Single journey tickets can be bought from the driver and cost €1.20 (cash only).

The plenary sessions and conference of the WPFD 2015 will be held at the National Library of Latvia, also called the Castle of Light (Gaismas pils in Latvian).

Language spoken


Latvian is the official language spoken in Latvia. Russian is often spoken as well. Both English and German are spoken to some degree.

Weather


The month of May is characterized by rising daily high temperatures, with daily highs increasing from 16°C to 20°C over the course of the month, exceeding 25°C or dropping below 9°C only one day in ten. Daily low temperatures range from 5°C to 9°C, falling below 0°C or exceeding 13°C only one day in ten. Precipitation in form of light rain is likely throughout the month. It can be humid.

Currency


Latvia uses the Euro since January 2014. The former currency, the Latvian Lat is no longer accepted.

Electric outlet


The Voltage is 220-240 Volts, the primary Socket Types are Europlug and Schuko.To use electronic devices with a lower voltage, please use a step-down transformer.
