Ecuador

© UNESCO Quito, Launching of the project “Girls in Science” in Ecuador

The celebration of the World Science Day for Peace and Development held in the city of Quito, Ecuador, consisted of the launching of the project “Girls in Science” and a Cinema-Forum.

In the framework of the World Science Day for Peace and Development, the Interactive Science Museum from Quito, in collaboration with the UNESCO Office in Quito, launched with a cycle of lectures the project “Girls in Science” on the 8th and 9th of November. The project will continue through the whole year 2014.

This project aims to motivate the scientific vocation among girls through non-formal education strategies. During these two first days of lectures, women specialized in sustainable development and science explained their work and research topics to the public, mostly 12-year-old girls. In particular, Ecuadorian geological heritage, sustainable architecture, local and traditional knowledge, sustainable energies and applied physics related to medicine were addressed. Further activities within this project will be the creation of a science club for girls, workshops in media-audiovisual training and workshops oriented to teachers.

In parallel, a new session of the Environmental Cinema Cycle was celebrated in Quito. Thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish Embassy in Ecuador, the documentary The Light Bulb Conspiracy was shown. The documentary treats the planned obsolescence, which is “the deliberate shortening of product life spans to guarantee consumer demand”, and the current consume standards. After the film, a forum with the public was held, involving specialists in the topic.

The Environmental Cinema Cycle is an initiative implemented by the Natural Sciences Sector at UNESCO Quito together with the French Alliance and the youth NGO Fundación Ciento Ochenta Grados. It purposes to draw attention to topics related to science and the environment.
