Workshop on the Implementation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention

Fine Mat Festival

This workshop aims at providing cultural experts in Samoa with training opportunities for the implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage at the country level.

Samoa, through the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (MESC), has been actively engaged in the safeguarding of its Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). One of its activities is the documentation of oral traditions in the country which was published in five volumes on Samoan legends and myths. The National Museum under MESC not only puts on display cultural objects but also hosts workshops on arts and crafts, providing a place for cultural revival and community outreach.

In February 2012, MESC organised ICH Ratification Workshop which resulted in the establishment of the ICH Working Group. Further, in October 2012, public hearings were held in two islands of Samoa in order to consult communities and ICH custodians whether or not Samoa should join the ICH Convention. Strongly supported by its traditional leaders and communities, Samoa is preparing itself for joining the ICH Convention.

With this as background, MESC will organise another capacity building Workshop focusing on the implementation of the ICH Convention. This Workshop will bring together stakeholders including government officers, NGOs, academics and traditional leaders so as to enhance their understanding on the implementation of the ICH Convention at country level.

This Workshop is a part of the regional project which received funding under UNESCO/Japanese Funds-in-Trust.
