Workshop on "Sustainability Science: A Science-based Approach to Realize the Future We Want for All"
The UNESCO Jakarta Office, with support of the Japanese Fund-in-Trust, and in collaboration with the University of Science of Malaysia and other institutions, organizes a regional workshop on sustainability science in Asia and the Pacific.
The event will bring together a group of regional experts and stakeholders from the region to discuss and develop a common understanding of sustainability science, and to identify key regional and national plans and measures to promote integrated cross-disciplinary coordination for formulating and delivering the post-2015 development agenda. Its purpose is to bridge the knowledge gap on sustainability science, and link research with policy development.
The workshop is part of a new initiative entitled “Sustainability Science” which the UNESCO Jakarta Office has initiated, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. This project aims to raise awareness about sustainability science among policy makers in the Asia and Pacific region, with a view to position this as part of the national and regional science and technology policy.
The key objectives of the workshop are to:
1. Develop a common understanding of the role of sustainability science in delivering solutions for key global challenges in the context of Rio+20 and the post-2015 development agenda.
2. Propose recommendations on the integration of sustainability science in UNESCO and wider programming to deliver sustainable solutions through creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship.
3. Engage policy makers of the Asia-Pacific region to uplift the role of sustainability science at the highest political levels and to develop a new contract between science and society, including policy makers and other stakeholder groups.
The UNESCO Jakarta Office has also collaborated with academics from Asia and Europe, to review the state-of-the-art of sustainability science literature internationally, to analyse the current status of sustainability science in higher education, research and policy as it applies in the Asia and Pacific region, and to identify potential pilot projects. This review, available since January 2013, will be presented to participants during the regional workshop.
