Seminar on the Establishment of a National Bioethics Committee in Trinidad and Tobago
Organized jointly by the National Commission for UNESCO of Trinidad and Tobago and the UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean, this seminar will support the creation of the National Bioethics Committee.
It will gather around 30 participants such regional and international experts in the field of bioethics, researchers, government officials, professionals in the fields of bioethics, health, the environment, animal sciences and agriculture, as well as lawyers, journalists, NGOs representatives and art and literary experts.
This event is the result of several years of close collaboration between the national authorities, UNESCO and eminent experts in the field of bioethics, with the goal to strengthen the capacities of Trinidad and Tobago in this area.
The work of this country towards the institutionalization of bioethics dates back to the early 2000s, when Trinidad and Tobago was represented within UNESCO’s International Bioethics Committee by Professor Courtenay Bartholomew (2000-2003).
Among other initiatives taken by the Government to develop bioethics at the national level, the National Commission for UNESCO of Trinidad and Tobago hosted a Regional Conference on Bioethics, in 2006, which aimed at promoting bioethical research and studies within the English-speaking Caribbean, following UNESCO’s Declarations and programmes.
Three years later, on International Environment Day 2009, the Bioethics Society of the English-speaking Caribbean (BSEC) chose to hold its 3rd Annual Bioethics Forum at the University of the West Indies, Port of Spain. Under the theme “Bioethical Standards – People and the Environment”, linking human health with healthy environments. This event gathered numerous experts, including from the UNESCO Office in Montevideo, and was an opportunity to raise awareness on bioethics and development, and to promote the need to create infrastructure on bioethics.
Now, the moment has come for the country to take the step towards the creation of its own National Bioethics Committee: a step which will be reached with this seminar supported financially and technically by the Regional Bioethics Programme of National Commission for UNESCO of Trinidad and Tobago, in the framework of the UNESCO’s Assisting Bioethics Committees project.
As of February 2013, 13 National Bioethics Committees are established in Latin America and the Caribbean.
