Revisiting Kathmandu. Safeguarding living urban heritage. International symposium
Machindranath chariot festival at Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square
The symposium takes place in a context where the understanding of heritage is changing to include not only monuments, but entire cities where people live, work, worship and celebrate festivals. As values and aspirations of the society change, the urban spaces must adapt and respond to this change. How do we maintain the delicate balance between conserving what provides the historic city it’s intrinsic character and value while, at the same time, allowing for the change that is required for a city to sustain its social and economic vibrancy?
The symposium will contribute to the international discussion on how best to safeguarding living urban heritage taking into account theoretical understanding as well as practical approaches. Each of the four individual symposium themes will be reviewed and assessed. Focus will however be given on the complex inter-linkages between the four themes and how they as a whole determine our approach to conservation of living urban heritage sites. The outcome of the symposium will be published.
