Exhibition What were you wearing?

UNESCO will organize the second exhibition of ¿Qué llevabas puesto? at the Cultural Center “Omar Dengo” in Heredia Costa Rica, on May 9th to 24th, 2019. This exhibition is aiming to combat the stereotype that rape has been woven with the clothes worn by the victims through displaying the clothes that the victims wore on the day they were attacked.
As the gender-based sexual violence is one of the serious problems that we are facing not only in Latin America but all over the world, UNESCO San José office will put its effort on eliminating the violence against women through the exhibition.
This exhibition is originally inspired by Dr. Mary Simmerling's poem reflecting the guilt of victims of sexual violence when they were interrogated for their dress on the day they were attacked. Based on this poem, the University of Arkansas designed the exhibition in 2013, by showing all the clothes that the victims were wearing. In this context, UNESCO San José office also held the exhibition through the same way since last year.
The first exhibition was held in 2018 for 17 days, successfully raising the awareness of the public that asking the victims what they were wearing at that moment is recreating the secondary violence to the survivors. In this vein, with fruitful support from the Asociación Cultural Tangente, the Municipality of Heredia and the Centro Cultural de España en Costa Rica (CCECR), UNESCO San José office will hold the 2nd exhibition, on May 9th to 25th, 2019.
Through this exhibition, UNESCO San José office is expected to raise awareness among victims of sexual violence who suffer guilt for what they were wearing as like the first exhibition. Also, in line with sustainable development goals on gender equality, UNESCO San José office will reinforce the importance of reflecting gender-based violence in this exhibition.
