Launch of "World Social Science Report 2013 - Changing Global Environments"
Entitled “Changing Global Environments” the 2013 World Social Sciences Report will be launched during the SHS Commission of the 37th session of UNESCO’s General Conference, on 15 November 2013, at noon.
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, the Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, Pilar Alvarez-Laso, will participate to this event, alongside the Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD, William C. DANVERS, and the Executive Secretary of ISSC, Heide Hackmann, and there will be time for questions and discussion.
Co-published by UNESCO, the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Report includes 100 articles written by 150 authors from 41 countries all over the world, is divided into 7 parts:
• The complexity and urgency of global environmental change and social transformation
• Social science capacity in global environmental change research
• The consequences of global environmental change for society
• Conditions and visions for change and sense-making in a rapidly changing world
• The responsibilities and ethical challenges in tackling global environmental change
• New approaches to governance and decision-making
• Contributions from International Social Science Council members, programmes and partners.
In this report, the authors find that the impacts of climate change cannot be grasped without understanding the human context in which they unfold. The social sciences must thus reframe climate change and global environmental change as fundamentally social rather than physical problems.
The authors who represent some 24 different disciplines and among whom a third are women help us understand the challenges that humanity faces. The Report issues an urgent call to action. Contributors include UNESCO (Social and Human Sciences Sector, Education Sector, and the Bureau of Strategic Planning).
Most of the articles responded to a call for papers widely circulated by the ISSC to research communities. ADG/SHS also circulated the call for papers prepared by the ISSC to Permanent Delegations and National Commissions.
The regular production of a World Social Science Report is a deliverable in the Framework Agreement between UNESCO and the ISSC for UNESCO's Medium Term Strategy 2008-2013.
As per para.03038 in the 36 C/5 under Major Programme III, MLA 3 "Supporting Member States in responding to social transformations by building and strengthening national research systems and promoting social science knowledge networks and research capacities": Emphasis will be put on strengthening social science capacities at the national level to reinforce the knowledge base required for effective response to the challenges of global environmental change.
The WSSR 2013 will contribute to expected result 6 under MLA 3 "International agendas on global environmental change informed and national policy responses enhanced by emphasis on its inherently social and human dimensions, drawing on the contributions of the social and human sciences".
It will also be a major contribution to the MOST thematic focus on ‘’Social transformations arising from Global Environmental Change’’ but also contribute to the thematic focus on ‘’Social Inclusion’’.
The Director-General of UNESCO has written a preface to this report, which was edited by the ISSC, and is co-published with OECD and UNESCO.
This special event will include simultaneous translation into 6 working languages of UNESCO, and will be webcast live.
