As part of the celebrations of World Philosophy Day in 2013, and in particular the 13th International Meetings on New Philosophical Practices held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, on 26 and 27 November 2013, the UNESCO House will host demonstration lessons of philosophy teaching to children of different ages.

Open to the adults and, of course, to the children, these master classes will be held on Tuesday 26 November, from 11 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm, and on Wednesday 27 November, from 4 pm to 5.30 pm.

Several methodologies have been developed over the last two decades and the majority of them will be presented by well-known specialists in specialized master classes.

Children of all ages are open to discussing a multitude of problems and questions of a philosophical nature which interest them personally.

The introduction of children to logical and rational thought not only develops their philosophical spontaneity but helps them become enlightened citizens, capable of formulating their own critical judgment and clear and reflective views about life from a very early age.

The practice of philosophy with children is based on the recognition of every child as an individual who should be respected, listened to and given the possibility to express his or her opinions and thoughts. The practice of philosophy in primary schools has been developing over the last two decades and its popularity increases every year.

Philosophical workshops for children have become an integral and coherent part of primary school programmes. They permit children to develop their linguistic capacities, to learn to argue, to discuss, to respect and to listen to the opinion of others. Philosophy practices with children are based on philosophical literature which enriches their personal culture and teaches them to interpret literary texts and to understand the challenges they contain.
