International Seminar: Sport and Human Development

What is the role of sport for human development? This question is the common thread of the International Seminar that UNESCO and Vale Foundation are organizing in Rio de Janeiro, on 25 November. The Seminar will gather personalities, researchers and national and international authorities in Sports and will be divided into 3 panels: 1) Megaevents: sport, sustainability and legacy; 2) Sport for Peace, Values and Fair Play; and 3) Sport as a Human Right, Social Inclusion and Development.

What is the role of sport for human development? This question is the common thread of the International Seminar that UNESCO and Vale Foundation, in partnership with Ernst&Young, Globo TV, IDB, the British Embassy and LAUREUS, will organize at the Museum of Art of Rio de Janeiro, on 25 November.

The Seminar will gather personalities, researchers and national and international authorities in Sports and will be divided into 3 panels: 1) Megaevents: sport, sustainability and legacy; 2) Sport for Peace, Values and Fair Play and 3) Sport as a Human Right, Social Inclusion and Development.

In addition to discussing the importance of Sport for full human development and fundamental human rights, the event will also call attention to the so-called social legacy of mega sports events to be held in Brazil in the years ahead. The Seminar will also include the recent experience of other countries in the theme, particularly Great Britain, and will also discuss in more details, the expectations and the organization, in particular in the city of Rio de Janeiro, for the main sporting event of the decade, the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

During the Seminar, the book collection “Sport” will be launched, which is a partnership between UNESCO and Vale Foundation. The main objective of this pedagogical material is to guide professionals that work in the Program “Brazil is worth the Gold”, a reference program of Vale Foundation in the area of Sports.

This series will help in the elaboration of concepts and methodologies to orient the pedagogical practice of physical education professionals involved in the Program. More than 50 specialists in the theme of Sport were consulted and provided their expertise in writing, revising, editing, etc. to make this collection a very rich and well elaborated collection in terms of knowledge gathering and experiences.

The following books are part of the collection: 1) Human physiology; 2) Exercise physiology; 3) Growing, development and maturation; 4) Sports Training; 5) Motor Learning; 6) Sport Psychology; 7) Sport as a possibility for development; 8) Nutrition in Sport; 9) Biomechanics of Human Movement; 10) Values in Sport; 11) Physical Evaluation; and 12) Pedagogy of Cooperation.
