Water education and capacity development are essential for freshwater security and the attainment of water-related development goals. This side event organized during the General Conference will focus on the work of UNESCO and Member States on water education and capacity development.
Examples from different levels of education and capacity development will be presented, in particular on the activities developed by the International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), water-related centres under the auspices of UNESCO, UNESCO Chairs on water, and cross-sectoral activities in the context of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and with UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network. The session will also emphasize the scope of water education and capacity development within the discussions for the post-2015 Development Agenda and its role as a means to catalyze international cooperation on water.
