Building Ocean Knowledge through partnerships for a Blue Society: UNESCO’s IOC as a catalyst for partnership

This side event, opened by Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, will be an opportunity to present an overview of our work with partners from the civil society to engage the public in understanding the ocean and changing our behaviors and relationship towards it.

Over the past five decades, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) has been a catalyst for international cooperation that has made the development of ocean knowledge possible. This is a continued effort and we still have much to learn about the ocean that sustains us, since we cannot preserve or manage what we do not know. However, we also need to address the missing piece: empowering people to become ocean citizens, because effective ocean stewardship requires the participation of all members of society.
IOC-UNESCO has developed fruitful new partnerships with the sailing community, foundations and NGOs, representatives of civil society who have strong ties with the ocean and work towards empowering ocean citizens. Projects and progress made together will be presented during the event.

It will also be a chance to discuss future actions to make knowledge accessible to the public so that each individual can become aware of the role they have to play; steering clear of alarmist messaging to give positive, action-driven, useful information to all members of society.

New bridges must be built among all of the communities involved with the ocean, not only governments and scientists, but also private companies and civil society. IOC- UNESCO is developing multi-level international cooperation toward this goal.

Partners include Tara Expeditions, FNOB/BWR (The Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing organizer of the Barcelona World Race), Plastic Oceans Foundation, Nausicaa, the World Ocean Network, Blue Society, Global Ocean Commission other UN Agencies.
