Director-General “boards” the Tara schooner for greater ocean sustainability
On 31 January 2013, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, Wendy Watson Wright, and the Assistant Director-General of the Sector for External Relations and Public Information of UNESCO, Eric Falt, visited an ocean exhibition at the “Port des Champs-Elysées” in Paris, organized by Tara Expeditions.
Tara Expeditions is a non-profit association based in France that organizes scientific expeditions on the world’s ocean with the objectives to improve our knowledge on the impacts of global warming on marine ecosystems, to increase general awareness about environmental issues amongst the general public, and to disseminate scientific data collected through the expeditions for educational and policy purposes. Tara Expeditions has been organizing missions aboard the research schooner ‘Tara’ for the last 9 years.
With the Operations Manager of Tara Oceans, Romain Troublé, the Director-General discussed potential areas of collaboration, including scientific cooperation in disseminating the results of Tara’s 2013 expedition around the Arctic, the development of joint advocacy and outreach materials on the importance of the ocean, for youth and the public at large, as well as the organization of a number of joint ocean events in 2013 and 2014 focusing on the sustainable management of the high seas.
