17.04.2013 - UNESCOPRESS

Director-General to attend Learning for All Ministerial Roundtable hosted by the World Bank and the Secretary-General of the UN

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, will take part in a roundtable discussion with education and finance ministers from eight countries representing nearly half the world’s out of school children on 18 April. Held in Washington D.C., the event is part of the Global Education First Initiative launched by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to boost progress in achieving the Education for All component of the 2015 Millennium Goals.

The Learning for All Ministerial Roundtable will focus on actions governments and international partners will take to get all children to school and improve learning outcomes. It will be hosted by World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, the UN Secretary-General and UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown and will bring together ministers from Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.

Between them, these eight countries are home to almost half of the 61 million children who are still out of school around the world today. Ahead of the Ministerial Roundtable, nationally-focused meetings between ministers, donor agencies, UN agencies, civil society organizations and the private sector, will provide the opportunity to examine critical education challenges in greater detail, and define key actions that will overcome obstacles and promote learning for all.

Those actions will be presented at the roundtable debate which will also feature the participation of the heads of UNICEF and UNDP, as well as UNESCO. The event will be open to the media.
