On 14 November 2013, the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), participated in the 10th meeting of the Platform 4 of the Eastern Partnership, held in Brussels, Belgium, with the aim to discuss the programme of work 2014-2017 for this cooperation initiative in the fields of culture, education, research, youth, media and information society.

This meeting of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Platform 4 mostly focused on the revision of the proposed tentative programme, especially strengthening joint activities for the promotion of culture as a driver and enabler for sustainable development. Additional proposals made by participating Member States included the organization of regional seminars on the improvement of cultural policies and the promotion of cultural and creative industries, with special reference to supporting the implementation of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Based on the discussions of the meeting, a revised and final version of the Platform 4 Work Programme for the years 2014-2107 was released by the European Commission, constituting the basic planning tool for future cooperation activities.

The Eastern Partnership is an initiative of the European Union (EU) governing relationship and neighbouring policy with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, intended to provide a venue for discussions of trade, economic strategy, travel agreements and other issues.

The partnership established four policy platforms – among which Platform 4 ‘Contacts between People’, a forum for discussion in fields including education, training, research, youth, culture, media and information society. It is coordinated by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC).
