UNESCO Prizes are prestigious Prizes addressing global themes conferred on one or several recipients by the Director-General upon recomandation of an independent and international jury. Each UNESCO Prize carries a high moral and symnolic value, associated with a respectable monetary award.

UNESCO Prizes enhance the strategic objectives of the Organization in the sectors of Education, Culture, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences and Communication and Information. They reward outstanding contribution of individuals or institutions towards the pursuit of UNESCO's ideals.

The strategy for UNESCO Prizes, adopted in 2005 by the Executive Board of UNESCO, aims to enhance the impact and visibility of the various Prizes which contribute to the profile and prestige of the Organization.
