UNESCO supports professional development of women journalists in Rwanda
Through the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), UNESCO is supporting the Association of Rwanda Women in the Media (ARFEM) to develop the capacity of female radio journalists in Rwanda.
These journalists are expected to sharpen their skills following a three-day training workshop which began on 3 October 2012. The workshop which was organized by ARFEM will focus on several areas, including the design and production of radio programmes on girls ‘education in Rwanda, adolescent reproductive health, women and poverty eradication, violence against women and children, magazine production, and the role of women in decision-making bodies.
The workshop which is also supported by the Catholic University School of Journalism, the Rwandan Ministry of Local Government and the Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO, is a component of an IPDC project, entitled “Communicating for development: Capacity building of female radio journalists in Rwanda.” The second component involves a drive to encourage young girls at the Catholic University to join the media profession after completing their academic studies.
