Building Capacity of Rural Female Teachers in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Teaching Methodologies through Mobile Phones

UNESCO is working to improve the content knowledge and pedagogical practices of female rural Pakistani teachers working in the field of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE).  The project uses mobile technologies to deliver information and educational videos to instructors who do not have easy access to traditional training or professional development. 

UNESCO’s implementation partner in Pakistan is the Federal Directorate of Education.  To date, the Directorate has created 20 videos on ECCE that are closely aligned with the national curriculum.  The videos cover a wide range of topics including learning of Urdu Alphabets, basic mathematical concepts and hygiene and are generally complemented with text resources.

To facilitate distribution, the videos and supplementary resources are uploaded to the Nokia Education Delivery platform, also known as NED.  NED streamlines the delivery of the videos to teachers participating in the program, and, as an open educational resource, they are freely available to other interested individuals and parties.

Using a simple process, teachers can download the videos to a mobile device (as part of this project mid-range mobile phones were provisioned to participating teachers).  The teachers can then connect their device to a digital projector to play videos for students, or they can watch the videos privately to assist lesson planning and spark ideas for classroom activities.
