EFA Crowdsourcing Challenge on Literacy: and the winning app is …
Sanjith Yeruva (United States) has been awarded a Nokia Lumia 800 phone with Windows for his prizewinning idea on how mobile communication can help strengthen literacy. Entitled “Test on Texts”, his mobile application for students evaluates their knowledge via text questions and suggests content in an intuitive manner.
The panel of judges also selected three special mentions for the best idea in the first phase of the Education for All Crowdsourcing Challenge:
- ReadWrite, by Simon Botes (South Africa), a mobile application that teaches users how to read and write in any language.
- Mobile Phone Assisted Reading and Augmented Reality-based Translation by Wu Dongyue (China), which uses Nokia’s mobile capabilities to scan a text, then have the program read the word aloud, so learners can link a text to a word.
- An educational game by John Doe (United Kingdom) which helps children learn words in a new language using a “treasure hunting” mobile application.
Yeruva’s winning idea, “Test on Texts” (TOT), is simple: teachers upload content to the TOT server for their students. Once the content is viewed by the students, a multiple choice text question (e.g. how many planets are in the Solar System?) is sent to the students’ mobile phones by the TOT server at a random time every day. Students register their answers, these are assessed by the TOT server, and then new educational content is suggested and provided. The student must learn the new content to correctly answer the next day’s text message.
The TOT application was selected among almost 200 entries by a panel of judges who considered it had potential for social impact and real educational value as it empowers students to explore their learning potential and stay engaged in the learning process.
Yeruva is now in the running to win a $3,000 cash prize and a library of children’s books worth $3,000 for a non-profit organization of his choice. The overall winner will be selected at the end of the EFA Crowdsourcing Challenge on 31 of May 2012, so participants can still submit their ideas on how mobile communication can help strengthen literacy.
