Philippe Pypaert

Philippe manages the Office’s activities in the field of Environmental Sciences. Since 1998, he is the Regional Hydrologist for Europe coordinating regional activities related to Man and the Biosphere (MAB), International Hydrological Programme (IHP) programmes and Coastal Regions and Small Islands (CSI) platform. He also co-ordinates the implementation of research activities funded by the Italian Government on Venice and its lagoon. He holds a PhD in environmental sciences at the Luxemburg University Foundation. His major specializations are on environmental studies, environmental information systems, territorial planning and rural sociology. He joined UNESCO in 1994.

Davide Poletto

Project Officer

Davide assists the Head of the Science Unit in carrying out regular and extra-budgetary programme activities. He is an expert in international cooperation and sustainable development affairs. He graduated in Political Sciences at the University of Padua and is a former Marie Curie fellow at the University of Keele in UK. He holds a European PhD in analysis and governance of sustainable development from the School for Advanced Studies in Venice (SSAV). He joined UNESCO in 2009 and started to collaborate with the Venice Office from 2006.

Lauren Bohatka

Assciate Project Officer

She is supporting the design and implementation of the bureau's contribution  to the EU-funded Ark of Inquiry project. Prior to joining UNESCO, she worked with UNDP Albania as their Tourism Programme Manager and as a consultant in sustainable tourism development with USAID in Romania and Morocco. She graduated in 2004 with a Master of Tourism Administration (MTA) from The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, DC and has been a lecturer in their Accelerated MTA programme since 2003. She joined UNESCO first in 2008.

Marina Gilebbi

Programme Assistant

Marina has joined the Science Unit taking on new duties and tasks. Previously, she coordinated the Secretariat of the Director to ensure its management and representational functions, prepared and reviewed relevant documents and narrative reports. She graduated in Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of Ca’ Foscari in Venice. She joined UNESCO in 1990, providing support to the Director of the Office. In 1993 she started working as Programme Assistant in the Science Unit, also assisting in the organization of scientific events.

Junfei Qian

Trainee

Junfei joined the Science Unit, for 1 year, as a trainee within the framework of a Sponsored Training Agreement, under the overall authority of the Director and the direct supervision of Head of Science Unit.  She specifically works on the implementation of the programme activities developed in the framework of the Office mandate in the field of Science, Environment and Sustainable Development, with particular reference to activities related to Geoparks and Biosphere Reserves, as well as to geo-hazards in DRR programmes.
