Mario Scalet

Head of Science unit. Senior Programme Specialist

He is head of unit and senior programme specialist of Basic Science and Engineering. He worked as an officer for international cooperation programmes in Science and Technology at the European Commission in Bruxelles and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. He was Scientific Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in Seoul and worked in Mozambique and in the Republic of Moldova for implementing university cooperation projects. Since 1986 he worked as a university researcher and professor in the field of plant biology applied to agriculture and environment. He joined UNESCO in August 2010.

Philippe Pypaert

He manages the Office’s activities in the field of Environmental Sciences. Since 1998, he is the Regional Hydrologist for Europe coordinating regional activities related to Man and the Biosphere (MAB), International Hydrological Programme (IHP) programmes and Coastal Regions and Small Islands (CSI) platform. He also co-ordinates the implementation of research activities funded by the Italian Government on Venice and its lagoon. He holds a PhD in environmental sciences at the Luxemburg University Foundation. His major specializations are on environmental studies, environmental information systems, territorial planning and rural sociology. He joined UNESCO in 1994.

Rosanna Santesso

Programme Specialist

She is responsible for editing and overseeing the production of the UNESCO Venice Office’s outreach products for public information and for implementing interdisciplinary activities aimed at rendering the Office’s mandate and actions more visible particularly in “communicating science and culture”. She is the conference officer for events convened and hosted in Palazzo Zorzi and secretary of the Office’s governance bodies.  She is a graduate of Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada) Faculty of Political Sciences. She joined UNESCO in 1989.

Davide Poletto

Programme Officer

He assists the Head of the Science Unit in carrying out regular and extra-budgetary programme activities. He is an expert in international cooperation and sustainable development affairs. He graduated in Political Sciences at the University of Padua and is a former Marie Curie fellow at the University of Keele in UK. He holds a European PhD in analysis and governance of sustainable development from the School for Advanced Studies in Venice (SSAV). He joined UNESCO in 2009 and started to collaborate with the Venice Office from 2006.

Cristina Faccia

Senior Programme Assistant

Since 2008, she is the personal assistant to the Head of Science Unit while continuing her support for the implementation of activities of the Unit. She is a graduate of Ca’ Foscari University (Humanities). She joined UNESCO in 1990. In 1998, she became the assistant to the Chief of Office. After moving to the UNESCO Venice Office's new premises at Palazzo Zorzi in 2002, she assisted for several years with the Information Officer in the organization of events and cataloguing of UNESCO publications.
