Jonathan Baker

Head of unit

Jonathan Baker holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Tufts University and a Juris Doctorate from Tulane University Law School.  He has 17 years of experience working for UNESCO in the Natural Sciences, both at headquarters and in the field. 

From 2003 to 2006, he served within the International Hydrological Programme in Paris. From 2006 to 2009 he was attaché de cabinet and focal point for Natural Sciences, strategic planning and decentralization, inter alia, in the office of the Director-General of UNESCO. 

From 2009 to 2014 at UNESCO’s sub-regional office for Central America and Mexico in San Jose, Costa Rica, he managed programmes in the areas of biosphere reserves, water, science, technology and innovation and disaster risk reduction.  From 2015 to 2018, at the Regional Bureau for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean in Montevideo, Uruguay, he was responsible for coordinating the MAB programme as well as disaster risk reduction activities in the region.

Davide Poletto

Project Officer

Davide assists the Head of the Science Unit in carrying out regular and extra-budgetary programme activities. He is an expert in international cooperation and sustainable development affairs.
He graduated in Political Sciences at the University of Padua and is a former Marie Curie fellow at the University of Keele in UK. He holds a European PhD in analysis and governance of sustainable development from the School for Advanced Studies in Venice (SSAV). He joined UNESCO in 2009 and started to collaborate with the Venice Office from 2006.

Marina Gilebbi

Programme Assistant

Marina has joined the Science Unit taking on new duties and tasks. Previously, she coordinated the Secretariat of the Director to ensure its management and representational functions, prepared and reviewed relevant documents and narrative reports. She graduated in Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of Ca’ Foscari in Venice. She joined UNESCO in 1990, providing support to the Director of the Office. In 1993 she started working as Programme Assistant in the Science Unit, also assisting in the organization of scientific events.

Csilla Erzsebet Biharvari


She holds a Master's Degree in Innovation and Business Administration from the Universities of Perugia and Bradford as well as in economics from Szeged University. She worked previously for FAO centre in Budapest and in various companies in Italy, Austria and Hungary in the field of sales and revenue management.
