Celebrations of the Sarajevo Winter Festival, symbol of dialogue and creativity
UNESCO Venice Office is supporting the XXVIIth edition of the International Festival “Sarajevo Winter”, organized in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from 7 to 28 February 2011.
This support is extended within the framework of the UN Joint Programme “Improving cultural understanding in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, implemented by UNESCO through its Antenna Office in Sarajevo, and seeks to promote intercultural dialogue as well as creativity and diversity of cultural expressions.
The Sarajevo Festival is a traditional meeting place for artists and citizens from the region and beyond, featuring exhibits and performances, and is placed this year under the theme “Art of Love”. Programme of events includes theatre plays, concerts, movies, fine arts, architecture and video exhibitions, panel discussions, literary events.
The Festival is held under the auspices of UNESCO, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the European Union, the Presidency of BiH, The Federation of BiH, the Council of Ministers of BiH, Sarajevo Canton, City of Sarajevo and Stari Grad Municipality. The festival is organized by the International Peace Center Sarajevo.
Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, has sent a message of support for the closing of the Sarajevo Winter Festival, emphasizing that this festival is “a yearly reminder of the power of culture to amaze, stimulate, question and unite”.
The MDG-F Joint Programme on “Improving Cultural Understanding in Bosnia and Herzegovina” is a 3-year programme financed by the Spanish Fund for the Achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDG-F). It is being implemented by 3 UN Agencies: UNDP, UNESCO and UNICEF, in cooperation with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH, Ministry of Culture and Sports of BiH, Ministry of Education and Culture of RS, as well as other institutions working in the area of education and culture.
