Effective Museum Management: Sharing Lessons Learnt
“The management concept and structure of the National Museum for Science and Technology “Leonardo da Vinci” is so interesting to know” said Luan Malltezi, Director of the National History Museum in Tirana, Albania at the end of the two-day training workshop “Best Practices in Museum Management: Communicating and Educating the Public”, recently organized in Milan, Italy, from 11-12 March 2010 by the UNESCO Office in Venice and the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, Italy.
UNESCO Venice Press Release N°2010-01 (Italy) 23/03/2010 : A group of experts from the National History Museum (NHM) in Tirana and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of Albania participated in this training workshop convened at the premises of the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci. The participants and the organizers of the training workshop were greeted by Engelbert Ruoss, Director of the UNESCO Venice Office and Fiorenzo Galli, Director of the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci.
Effective museum management practices such as marketing and fundraising activities successfully implemented by the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci were presented to the participants. Views and techniques were shared and discussed and the participants showed high interest in the vast variety of the educational programs developed by the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in their effort to best serve the community, and in particular youth. The result is that these practices have enabled the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci to become one of the top five museums in Italy.
The training workshop was organized in the framework of the MDG-F Joint Program “Culture and Heritage for Social and Economic Development” which is being implemented jointly with UNDP under the leadership of UNESCO in close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of Albania. Transforming the National History Museum in Tirana into a modern institution is the flagship activity of this program which intends to establish a new governance and management structure for the Museum as well as to upgrade the presentation, conservation and security level of the objects and artefacts in its trust. Education and communication with the public will constitute one of the new dimensions in the new governance and management structure that will be eventually introduced in the National History Museum in Tirana.
“The content and discussions covered precisely the topics and issues needed at this critical time of decision-making for the National History Museum in Tirana. The NHM will finally begin its process of transformation into a modern cultural institution operating at international standards” said Engelbert Ruoss.
The NHM Director expressed his conviction that this activity marks the start of cooperation between the two institutions and will be followed up by other activities.
