Geophysics at the Cross-Roads. Belgrade and Mecavnik, Serbia. 10-16 May 2009

The International Conference, High-Level Round Table and Technical Exhibition organized by the Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS) with the financial support of UNESCO-BRESCE will be held from 10 to 16 May 2009 in Belgrade and Mecavnik, Serbia.


Organized on the occasion of the 5th Congress of the Balkan Geophysical Society, the events will focus on the state of the art of geophysical methods applied for hydrocarbon and geothermal resources, mineral exploration, environmental, engineering and groundwater geophysics, cultural heritage, as well as on the latest developments of geophysical instruments, processing techniques and software. Special sessions related to geological storage of CO2 (as a way of climate changes mitigation), HSE, education and journalism related to geological problems (e.g. petroleum research and exploration, water resources and their rational use, geo-environment and protection of cultural monuments, geo-heritage and geo-tourism) are planned.

A High-Level Round Table 'Energy, Economy and Environment' will be organized on 14-15 May, in Macavnik.

The event will offer a platform for discussion among energy experts, representatives European and international organisations and Ministers of energy and environment from the South Eastern European countries on the subject of geological storage of CO2, an approach to mitigate climate changes.

The Congress is on the list of events celebrating 2009 as Year of Science and aims at contributing to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals. Special attention will be directed to students and young geophysicists: a Geo-Quiz will be organized, as well as a Career Center and Universities corner. Among the students' activities, a special session dedicated to Charles Darwin is also planned.
