With the support of the Spanish Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Achievement Fund, UNESCO has played an active role in working with other UN Agencies in South East Europe to help those countries accelerate their achievement of the MDGs by 2015. A promotional video has been created to help highlight some of the key successes in 6 joint programmes that UNESCO has contributed to in the region.

When the MDG-F decided to invest resources in a given area, a ‘funding window’ was opened for this purpose. Thematic Windows allowed the Fund to target specific themes. In South East Europe, UNESCO participated in joint programming in 4 thematic windows: Culture and Development; Conflict Prevention and Peace building; Democratic Economic Governance; and, Environment and Climate Change. In cooperation with 5 other UN agencies, UNESCO’s involvement was coordinated through its Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), in 4 countries:

Albania

  • Culture and Heritage for Social and Economic Development (August 2008 - December 2011)

Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • Improving Cultural Understanding in Bosnia and Herzegovina” (January 2009 - June 2012)
  • Mainstreaming Environmental Governance: linking local and national action in Bosnia and Herzegovina (August 2008 - December 2011)
  •  Securing Access to Water through Institutional Development and Infrastructure (November 2009 - May 2012)

The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

  • Enhancing Inter-Ethnic Community Dialogue and Collaboration (July 2009 - July 2012)

Turkey

  • Alliances for Cultural Tourism (ACT) in Eastern Anatolia (December 2008 - April 2012)

The success stories presented therein provide just a sampling of the many activities that were undertaken in close cooperation with national partners. Results from these activities have contributed to achieving MDGs 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8. The video was created by Ketevan Shengeliya, as part of her internship at the UNESCO Venice Office.
